Phoenix, AZ – On Saturday, July 10, 2021, MCSO deputies responded to a domestic violence call in Youngtown.
Upon the deputy arrival he quickly identified a suspect believed to be involved with the call for service. As he began giving commands to this individual, another suspect, later identified as James Crespo III, exited the apartment from behind the deputy and fired multiple gunshots towards the deputy. Thankfully, the deputy was not injured, and he immediately returned gunfire. Crespo fled from the property, evading arrest.
As the suspect fled, Crespo burglarized a home within the City of El Mirage and stole a vehicle from a neighboring residence.
On Monday, July 12, 2021, MCSO deputies apprehended Crespo in the City of Mesa. He was arrested and booked into the Intake, Transfer and Release (ITR) facility on the following charges:

- Misconduct Involving Weapons / Prohibited Possessor
- Discharging Firearm in City Limit (Class 6 Felony)
- Endangerment (Class 6 Felony)
- Criminal Trespass in the First Degree (Class 6 Felony)
“This is another example, one that we now see too frequently in law enforcement, where deputies and officers face deadly encounters by suspects who without engagement or any form of provocation threaten the lives of our law enforcement officers who prioritize the safety of the community over their own. I’m thankful that we have men and women who are willing to wear the badge to ensure the safety of others at their own risk. The deputy’s quick tactical response likely saved his life and possibly that of other community members,” said Sheriff Paul Penzone.
This investigation will be reviewed by the Maricopa County Attorneys Office.
