The District headquarters is located in the Maricopa County Southeast Regional Campus. This location is just south of the US 60 Freeway, west of Mesa Drive.

The District Staff is comprised of a District Commander (Captain); a Deputy Commander (Lieutenant); six sergeants, 40 uniformed patrol deputies, and six plain clothed detectives. An administrative staff of three civilians supports operations.

District I covers an area of approximately 1,053 square miles. Although not the largest in size, District I is the busiest of the four Districts, averaging 40% more calls for service. It also encompasses a very diverse area ranging from rural farms to densely populated urbanized communities. For about six months every year, a large population of winter visitors also resides in unincorporated east Mesa as well as the master-planned community of Sun Lakes south of Chandler. Sheriff Arpaio is committed to providing professional service to residents and visitors alike.

District I borders the Salt River Recreation Area located in the Tonto National Forest. Our deputies often support and work closely with the Sheriff's Lake Patrol personnel who are assigned to the Salt River and its Lakes. The District also shares borders with several Indian Reservations and has concurrent jurisdiction over non-Indians on those parts of these reservations located in Maricopa County.

Sandwiched between the cities of Tempe and Phoenix is the small town of Guadalupe. With a population of about 5,000 residents, Guadalupe is rich in Hispanic and Yaqui Indian culture. Although incorporated in 1975, the Sheriff's Office provides law enforcement services to Guadalupe on a contractual basis. This contract calls for staffing one beat during the day shift hours, and two beats during the evening and nighttime hours. A detective is also assigned to work those cases requiring investigative expertise. Supervision, support services and a community action deputy are also provided by the contract. A substation is located with the Guadalupe Fire Department at 8413 S. Avenida del Yaqui.

The town of Queen Creek is also located in District I in the far southeast corner of Maricopa County. In fact, part of the corporate town limits actually fall inside of Pinal County. Since Queen Creek also contracts with Maricopa County Sheriff's Office for law enforcement service, this presents a unique situation for our deputies. Officials from all three governments work together toward our mutual concern of providing the best possible services to the community. Queen Creek incorporated in 1989 in order to help preserve the rural atmosphere that was being threatened by the rapid growth of the entire east valley. Most of the residential lots in Queen Creek are zoned for one acre or larger, making it very attractive to those who prefer life with a country flavor.

At the present time, Queen Creek shares a beat deputy with residents in the adjoining unincorporated county area each shift. Supervision, detectives, and other law enforcement support services are provided for in the contract as well.

The Maricopa County Southeast Jail facility is co-located with the District I headquarters in Mesa. Although used primarily for booking, the facility can hold approximately 60 sentenced inmates. The jail is staffed with deputies and detention officers 24 hours a day in order to insure that our deputies and police officers from any of the east valley communities can detain arrested individuals without having to transport them to the Madison Street Jail in Phoenix. This is not only convenient for our law enforcement officers, it also minimizes their absence away from their beats. Sheriff Arpaio will not turn away an officer with a prisoner for lack of space.
