As an Explorer, young adults have the opportunity to assist the Maricopa County Sheriffs Office.
Explorers can broaden their understanding and firsthand knowledge of the challenges and job skills that
make up their community’s law enforcement service. In addition to gaining a working knowledge of police
work, the participants have the opportunity to give of themselves to the community. Explorers are volunteers
and do not serve as county employees, sworn or civilian.
The Explorers receive specialized law enforcement training, attend weekly meetings and volunteer to perform
important community services. Along the way, they learn to work as a team, they gain leadership skills, and they
serve the community. The Explorer program instills ethical development for those who may be interested in a law
What We Are Not
The Maricopa County Sheriffs Office Post is not a program for “at risk” youth. An applicant cannot have
any arrests and/or convictions for felonies or serious misdemeanors. A member must be able to work independently
with other Explorers, Supervisors and Deputies. An applicant must be reasonably physically fit and able to stand
for long periods and work in various weather conditions. Explorers must be able to take orders and instructions
from other senior Explorers or Explorers of greater rank.
